It is one of the most common small frustrations of digital life: the photo is great, but the shape is wrong. The horizontal group shot needs to become a vertical story. The product photo needs to fit a wide banner. The profile needs a square, the cover needs a panorama, and the printable frame wants yet another ratio entirely.

The old options and why they hurt

The blur-bars trick, padding the sides with a blurred copy of the image, became the universal shrug of social media because it at least avoided distortion, while announcing that the image did not fit. What uncropping actually does?

The software studies the existing photo, its lighting, textures, colors, and structures, then generates new pixels beyond the original borders that plausibly extend what is there. Sky continues into more sky, a wooden table gains more grain, a wall extends its paint and shadows.
The original pixels stay untouched in the middle; only the new canvas around them is invented. When the background is reasonably continuous, the seam is genuinely hard to spot, and a portrait becomes a widescreen image that looks like it was shot that way.

Keep the main subject well inside the original area, since generated regions are best treated as scenery rather than substance. And always zoom in on the seams before using the result, because when outpainting fails, it fails at the borders first.
A note on honesty when photos do a job
Extended photos raise one question worth taking seriously: the new areas are invented, and sometimes that matters. For a story background or a banner behind text, nobody is deceived.
But when a photo is doing evidentiary work, showing a buyer the condition of an item, a renter the size of a room, a customer what is included in a purchase, generated content must not change what the image communicates.
Regulators have been explicit that the ordinary rules against deception apply fully to AI-assisted material; the Federal Trade Commission’s policy statement on AI makes clear that misrepresenting products or services is unlawful regardless of the technology used to do it.
The sensible household rule is simpler than the legal one: extend photos to fit frames, never to imply things that were not there.
